Hair Transplants for Women

Hair transplantation has become an effective, natural-looking option for 90% of men experiencing male pattern baldness. So it should work for women, too, right?

Unfortunately, this is not the case. Hair restoration surgery involves moving hair follicles from a dense, unaffected donor site (like the back of the head) to a bald or thinning site (like the crown).

Most women who are experiencing hair loss see a generalized thinning of the hair all over their head, and therefore do not have a donor site suitable for hair transplant surgery. In fact, the hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT) that causes female pattern baldness actually kills off hair follicles, so even if some were harvested, they would not “take” at the transplant site.

That said, a handful of women who are experiencing hair thinning not related to DHT may be good candidates for hair transplant surgery.
